Wooden boxes - handmade in Wales

Oak shavings from a sharp scraper
Fine oak shavings from a sharp scraper

These boxes are handmade in Welsh hardwood and sometimes reclaimed wood.

I work the wood with planes, spokeshaves and scrapers rather than smoothing to a uniform finish with sandpaper.  This gives an interesting texture and perhaps a sharper, brighter lustre to the wood.  I also burnish edges with hardwood to give the impression of years of touch and often consolidate corners with a small hammer; a light tap here compresses and hardens the wood fibres.

Walnut oil on oak gives a warm aged finish, whilst sycamore, for example, looks best with a wax applied hot.  Normally, I finish the inside of a box with one or two light coats of very thin shellac polish.

Some new work to show on here soon with perhaps a bit of a restructuring to the layout.
